Abstract
ON February 16, 1907, the late Duke of Devonshire, my predecessor in the Chancellorship of the University of Cambridge, was through your courtesy enabled to make a statement dealing with the needs of the University, and to give some account of the efforts made by the Cambridge University Association to obtain funds to increase the endowments of the University. The interest taken by him in the association and its work is well known, and on succeeding to the Chancellorship I have accepted the invitation of the association to become its president. I therefore beg that you will now allow me to renewnhis appeal to all those interested in the promotion of higher education, learning, and research.
