Abstract
IN its comparatively brief existence of seventy-five years, the University of Sydney has been the recipient of numerous, benefactions. The princely Challis request (1880) of £276,000, and the even greater of the late Sir S. McCaughey (1920), have rendered the University much less dependent than its neighbours upon State aid, particularly as the income in each of these instances is available for general purposes. Other noteworthy gifts, including one of £100,000 by Sir P. N. Russell, and another of £30,000 by Thomas Fisher, were allocated to specific purposes by the donors.
