Abstract
IN a recent communication under this title, Finniston, Jones and Madsen1 utilize the two basic equations and due respectively to Mayer2 and O'Neill3. These equations have also been quoted in other recent papers, for example, by Tabor4. It therefore seems desirable to make available some results which show that (2), although it may be applicable in some circumstances, is not generally true.
