Abstract
THE importance of β-alanine, especially as a constituent of pantothenic acid, in biological systems is well recognized; but little is known about its biosynthesis. One possible mechanism of formation involves the decarboxylation of aspartic acid though this has been established only for a small number of bacteria1. It has been recently found that β-alanine might also be formed from uracil by a certain species of Clostridium 2.
