Nature of the Sinus Lining Cells of the Spleen

Abstract

VARIOUS opinions have been expressed on the nature of the cells lining the venous sinusoids of the spleen1. They have been described as forming a type of internal epithelium, as muscle cells and as separated, longitudinal endothelial ridges. Klemperer accepted Mollier's evidence2 that the wall of a splenic sinus is formed by a cytoplasmic reticulum with reinforcing fibres, essentially identical to the general cytoplasmic and fibrillar reticulum of the pulp. As recently as 1957 Weiss3 stated that splenic cords are collapsed splenic sinuses, and the preponderant cell type in the cords is the same as that lining sinuses.
