Abstract
IN a previous communication, the herbicidal activity of certain 2-trifluoromethyl-benzimidazoles having a free hydrogen in the 1 position was described1. Although these compounds also possessed promising insecticidal and acaricidal properties their practical use was precluded because of their phytotoxic properties. Further chemical studies made by Newbold and his group2 have shown, however, that it is possible to retain, and occasionally enhance, the insecticidal activity of the parent benzimidazoles while simultaneously reducing their undesirable herbicidal and mammalian toxicity properties by suitable N-substitution. This communication describes the preliminary results obtained with one of these derivatives which has shown promising acaricidal properties—namely, 5,6-dichloro-l-phenoxy-carbonyl-2-trifluoromethyl benzimidazole, to which the code number NC 5016 has been allocated.
