Abstract
LACTATE dehydrogenase (LDH) activity is present from the earliest stages of animal development and has been detected in the oocytes of both vertebrates1 and invertebrates2. It is now recognized that the enzyme is composed of two types of sub-unit3, with separate structural genes4, which probably combine randomly5 into tetramers forming the five electrophoretically distinct forms, H4, H3M, H2M2, HM3, M4. These have been numbered LDH-1 to 5, respectively, with LDH-1 being the most electropositive.
