Abstract
MICROSOMAL reactions play a part in the conversion of many insecticides in mammals and insects. In the housefly, some resistant strains show an increased rate of microsomal detoxication of methylcarbamates1 and DDT2. Some well known insecticide synergists block microsomal reactions3 and, because they can overcome resistance in some strains resistant to organophosphate (OP) insecticides, it has been concluded that increased microsomal degradation is a cause of resistance4. Synergists of this type can be either synergistic or antagonistic when combined with phosphorothionates, probably reflecting the balance of “intoxication” (activation by desulphuration) to the corresponding phosphate, and detoxication of the phosphate5.
