Abstract
Atomic height steps and kinks in steps have been identified on platinum surfaces as distinct catalytic sites where C–C, C–H and H–H bond scissions occur during the reactions of hydrocarbons. The active catalyst surface is covered with a carbonaceous overlayer whose properties affect both the reaction rates and the production distribution. A model for the catalysis of hydrocarbons on platinum surfaces is proposed which incorporates the effects of the low coordination number active sites and the atomic surface structure.
