Abstract
I PRESENT here a method for determining the combined effects of concurrent mineral precipitation and dissolution on the carbon isotope composition of groundwater. The results are applied to the ‘adjustment problem’ in the 14C dating of groundwater, and are illustrated using published data from the London Basin chalk aquifer. Some 14C ages are changed by more than 10,000 yr.
