Abstract
STUDIES by Siperstein et al.1,2 first described the cytology of the adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) cell in the rat adenohypophysis. This cell is stellate and contains peripherally organised granules averaging 220 µm in diameter. Their cytological work was confirmed in later immunocyto-chemical studies in our laboratory3–5, in which ACTH was localised in the secretory granules of cells of this type. In our recent immunocytochemical studies of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) cells, however, FSH was found in a cell which resembled the ACTH cell. We termed this cell the Type III gonadotroph6,7. Here we describe studies designed to test the specificity of the reaction for FSH in this cell type, and the relationship between the Type III gonadotroph and the cell containing ACTH.
