Abstract
A HOST-CONTROLLED restriction–modification system1–3 is a means of protection by a host against attacks of bacteriophages. Recently, coliphage T3 and T7 have been found to overcome4–7 the host-controlled restriction–modification systems of their host strains Escherichia coli B and K, but details of the mechanism are not well understood at present. We have found that a Bacillus subtilis phage φNR2rH, a mutant of φNR2 (ref. 8), also has the ability to overcome the restriction–modification system of B. amyloliquefaciens strain N, and detected a BamNx inhibitor in cells infected with φNR2rH.
