Abstract
The linear regressions of individual genotypes on the mean value of all genotypes for a number of environments has been used as a measure of a genotype's response to environmental variables. The present data from spring barley indicated that genotype by environment interactions may not always be adequately explained by a linear function of the environment. A genotype's phenotypic variance over environments may be used as a measure of environmental sensitivity. It is demonstrated that randomly produced F3 and or doubled haploid families may be used to predict new combinations of mean performance and environmental sensitivity.
