Abstract
Uniaxial drawing of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) sheets was carried out both in the solid and molten states over a temperature range from 120°C to 150°C. For two UHMW-PE samples of higher molecular weight, melt drawing yielded higher Young’s moduli than solid drawing. The molecular orientation, the microstructure, and the melting behavior of hot drawn UHMW-PE sheets were investigated by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), density, and birefringence. The hot drawn UHMW-PE sheets were found to be distinctly different from hot drawn normal molecular weight high density polyethylene (NMW-HDPE) sheets with respect to SAXS pattern, melting behavior, and crystallinity.
