Abstract
THE Petersen Grab is now being much used in various parts of the world for the purpose of picking up a portion of the sea-bottom—where this is soft enough—along with the animals of all kinds contained in the surface layer of that portion of the sea-bottom. When a sufficiently large number of samples can be taken on a homogeneous stretch of ground the grabsamples are made a means of determining quantitatively the average distribution of the sedentary population of that area.
