Abstract
EXTENSIVE evidence from North America shows that DDT, at concentrations lethal to Simulium larvæ, need have no direct, harmful effect on fishes1. However, it may severely affect other aquatic insects2–4, notably Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera2,4,5, which are known to be important as food for many insectivorous fishes. It follows that the feeding habits of some fishes are likely to be modified considerably by insecticidal treatment, yet apparently this aspect of control has only once5 received attention in the past. In view of the Simulium control measures envisaged in Africa, it is considered desirable to record some effects of DDT on the feeding habits of fishes in Uganda.
