Abstract
ALTHOUGH it has yet to be finally proven, it now seems clear (ref. 1 and A. J. Heeger, unpublished) that certain organic conductors show indications of the approach of superconductivity at temperatures as high as 58 K. Radical anion salts or charge-transfer complexes of tetracyanoquinodimethane (such as tetrathiofulvalene tetracyanoquinodimethane, abbreviated TTF : TCNQ, structural formula in Fig. 1) are known25 to possess both the necessary'Conducting spine-made up of the TCNQ entities stacked in infinite one-dimensional arrays with interplanar distances of the order of 0.33 nm-and the necessary closely situated “sheath” of highly polarizable molecular groupings (such as TTF) along which, under appropriate circumstances, excitonic exchange could occur. The feasibility of attaining high-temperature superconductivity, a phenomenon which has elicited much recent discussion6 ˜9, is again brought into question.
