Abstract
PREVIOUS investigations in the adult white rat1 have shown that intramuscular administration of cortisone can depress the hæmolysin response after a single intraperitoneal injection of sheep erythrocytes. The effect of cortisone is dependent on (1) the dose of antigen, (2) the dose of hormone, and (3) the time of administration of hormone (location in time in relation to the antigen injection). At the respective dose-levels (per 100 gm. weight) of 4 mgm. a day of cortisone and 2 ml. of a 0.03–0.3 per cent suspension of sheep erythrocytes the following time limits were found: a maximum effect was obtained when cortisone was given for three days, beginning two days before the antigen injection and ending with an injection on the day of antigen injection. The lack of significant effect of hormone injections after the day of antigen injection indicates that an early phase of the production of antibody is disturbed by the action of cortisone.
