Initial Stages of Oxidation of Coal

Abstract

OUR knowledge on the initial stages of oxidation of coal in air or oxygen is far from complete, though it is long known that the first stage is the formation of coal–oxygen complex and peroxygen-like bodies1. It is this stage and onwards where information on the mechanism of the progress of oxidation is scant. We have recently found that in the first phase of coal oxidation dehydrogenation appears to be the main reaction, without any drastic destruction of the carbon structure of coal.
