Abstract
THE use of radioactively labelled material has made possible a direct appraisal of the proportions of metabolic products derived from a particular substrate in an isolated tissue. Such in vitro metabolic studies on the young retina have shown that the respiratory carbon dioxide produced by the tissue during the oxidation of labelled exogenous glucose substrate does not correspond to the measured oxygen uptake. Cohen and Noell1 found in the young, non-functional rabbit retina that about 65 per cent of the respiration appeared to be due to the oxidation of endogenous non-carbohydrate material, even when adequate glucose was available to the respiring tissue, whereas in the adult rabbit retina glucose oxidation accounted for the major proportion of respiration.
