Such frozen samples exhibit ESR signals considerably more complicated than those which we have observed at physiological temperatures. Most of these signals appear to be due to paramagnetic ions. For this reason, and because of saturation effects resulting from the high microwave-power used in such studies, results obtained from frozen tissues are not directly comparable to those obtained from surviving tissues in liquid aqueous systems, such as those reported here.
