Abstract
THE efficacy of bromides as hypnotics or sedatives has long been recognized, but their mode of action is unknown. Many drugs which affect the central nervous system, alcohols and barbiturates, for example, have been shown to influence synaptic activity1–3 and it seemed likely that bromides might act similarly. The effect of bromide ions on transmission at the neuromuscular junction has therefore been investigated.
