Abstract
THE majority of free-living dinoflagellates differ from other eukaryotes in possessing high chromosome numbers1, large amounts of DNA2 per cell, uniform chromosome size and in their apparent lack of histone proteins3. One of their most interesting properties which they share along with the euglenids4 is the condensed state of their chromosomes throughout the cell cycle5.
