Abstract
INTERFERON (IF), as well as showing antiviral activity is able to inhibit cell growth and metabolism both in vivo1,2 and in vitro1,3–5. In the in vitro systems used, dead cell counts are always very low, indicating that IF inhibits cell growth by decreasing their doubling potential4,5 without appreciable cell death. Since we have shown previously that IF inhibits in vivo growth of Friend virus (FLV)-induced murine erythroleukaemic cells (FLC)6, we have studied the in vitro effects of IF addition to cultures of FLC. These cultures, on exposure to dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), undergo massive erythroid differentiation accompanied by haemoglobin (Hb) synthesis7,8 as a consequence of production of globin messenger RNA9,10. Here we present evidence for a dose-dependent and reversible inhibitory effect of IF on both growth and erythroid differentiation of DMSO-stimulated FLC.
