Crystal structure of alinite

Abstract

ALITE, a major constituent1 of Portland cement, is essentially tricalcium silicate Ca3(SiO4)O, which contains both (SiO4)4− and free O2− ions2,3. It is of interest to cement technology to examine how chloride contamination of the raw materials affects the phases present in the resulting cement, and the extent to which the free oxide ions of tricalcium silicate are replaceable by Cl−. While this replacement can be regarded as complete in the compound4,5 Ca3SiO4Cl2, it is only partially accomplished in the new compound alinite, which is described in this note.
