Crown gall disease

Abstract

Agrobacterium tumefaciens induces tumours in dicotyledonous plants by transferring part of a large bacterial plasmid to the eukaryotic cell. As well as disrupting control of cell division, the transferred DNA determines the synthesis in transformed tissue of novel amino acid compounds which serve as specific substrates for the bacterium. It may prove possible to exploit such DNA transfer for the genetic engineering of higher plants.
