The microscopic findings showed that the cause of death in the four baboons was asphyxiation and circulatory shock secondary to acute gastric dilatation (AGD). In one animal, bacterial emboli were seen in the lungs, suggesting that bacterial septicemia may have occurred shortly before death.

AGD or bloat syndrome has been reported in a variety of nonhuman primates. It is common in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, seen frequently in other macaques7 such as stumptailed macaques (Macaca arctoides)11,12 and cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis)4,9,10,13,14 and also seen in baboons (Papio spp.)15. AGD has also been reported in owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus)10, squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus)10,16 and white colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza)10,17.
