Linking brain connectivity and behavior after acute and chronic alcohol exposure

Functional connectivity density mapping shows that acute exposure to alcohol (left panel) increases local and global functional connectivity within the medial dorsal and ventral lateral nuclei of the thalamus. Chronic exposure to alcohol (right panel) affects connectivity density in a wider range of brain regions, including the calcarine, posterior cingulate, precuneus, prefrontal cortex, thalamus and cerebellum. These effects on connectivity density accounted for alcohol-related changes in mood, motor function and cognitive performance.
