Abstract
A Corynebacterium diphtheriae strain, containing two copies of the corynephage β45 genome integrated into its chromosome, has been isolated and characterized. This strain produces and secretes into the medium large amounts of diphtheria toxoid CRM45, a non toxic, prematurely terminated fragment of diphtheria toxin that can be used for the construction of chimeric toxins. One gram of purified CRM45 can be easily obtained from 10 liters of culture supernatant.
