Neglected no more The World Health Organization is teaming up with national governments, drug companies and charitable organizations in a major push to treat or eradicate diseases that disproportionately affect the world's poor. The $1.4 billion initiative, unveiled on 30 January, will target 17 tropical neglected diseases, ten of which the public-private partnership aims to control or eliminate by the end of the decade. “This partnership is by far the most cost-effective approach to treating common diseases in impoverished people,” says Julie Jacobson, a senior program officer at the Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which pledged $363 million over the next five years to the effort.
