What is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

Silver Diamine Fluoride or 'SDF' is a liquid containing silver and fluoride stabilised in ammonia. SDF is not routinely used in the UK but has received increasing attention in recent years due to the growing evidence for its use in caries management in children. The simple technique makes it very suitable for children as well as in general practice. One important side effect that must be discussed with patients and parents as part of informed consent is the permanent dark staining that occurs following application. There are also current regulatory limitations for its uptake in the UK. SDF shows very promising advantages in helping to improve our children's oral health and, in turn, their quality of life.
