Circles and squares depict the results of eDNA analyses; stars and triangles represent known localities of the black or the white Proteus, respectively. Categorisation of sites is explained in Fig. 1b and in the Methods section. Doblička Gora and Poljanska Gora are the south-eastern foothills of the Kočevski Rog Plateau. The map was created using ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1 (Esri 2015).
