Age-related changes in the composition of the vascular wall result in mechanical and structural alterations associated with a range of cardiovascular diseases, such as arteriosclerosis and aneurysm formation. A loss of arterial elasticity and reduced arterial compliance are indicators of increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Additionally, ageing of the microvasculature is associated with dysfunction of a range of organs. Given that ageing confers a greater risk for vascular disease development than numerous conventional risk factors, including smoking and lipid levels, increasing our understanding of the mechanisms underlying vascular ageing presents a clear opportunity to reduce the healthcare burden of these conditions.
This Collection will bring together manuscripts that provide insight into artery remodelling with age, ways arterial compliance may be improved and how both macrovascular and microvascular ageing is correlated with clinical risk.
