Joaquín's main research aim is to understand why biodiversity is distributed the way it is in space and time. He is particularly interested in community structure and the processes that drive the spatial and temporal dynamics of ecological assemblages. His current work aims at unifying into a single framework the different hypotheses about the origin of geographic gradients of biodiversity and community dynamics; in particular, the interplay of niche and coexistence as determinants of species co-occurrence, and the concurring effects of the evolutionary history of species, glaciations and current climate. He also works on assessing and accounting for data-driven uncertainty in biodiversity analyses.

Mar Cabeza is a spatial ecologist, with broad interests spanning from population ecology to macroecology. She currently sees herself as a truly interdisciplinary conservation scientist, integrating social and ecological research. Mar’s present work has a strong focus on tropical socio-ecological systems, through which she attempts to address both ultimate and proximate causes of success and failure of conservation actions and plans.

Dr José Alexandre Felizola Diniz-Filho is professor in the Department of Ecology, at the Federal University of Goiás, Brasil, and 1A researcher at the Brazilian National Council for Research and Development (CNPq), working in the application of statistical and computational methods in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, mainly on how geographically and phylogenetically structured data can help disentangling ecological and evolutionary mechanisms underlying macroecological patterns and, at the same time, provide solutions to mitigate current biodiversity crisis.

Prof von der Heyden is a molecular ecologist working predominantly on southern African marine systems. Her research is by necessity broad, but primarily focusses on the conservation and sustainable utilisation of species and the marine environment. Her particular interests lie in the applicability of molecular ecological and genomics tools to inform spatial planning, understanding MPA connectivity patterns and resilience and adaptation of marine species to ongoing and future change, as well as the impacts of changing marine communities on society.
Darren C.J. Yeo, PhD

Dr Yeo leads the Freshwater and Invasion Biology Laboratory at the Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore (NUS); and holds a concurrent appointment of Deputy Head of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at NUS. Darren's main research interests are in freshwater ecology and biodiversity, aquatic invasions, and freshwater decapod crustacean (systematics and taxonomy, and ecology and conservation).

Iain Dickson, PhD
Iain joined Nature Communications in January 2021 after 5 years at Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology as an Associate Editor and then Senior Editor. He has a background in marine biology and oceanography, with BSc and MRes degrees from the University of Southampton. Iain then obtained his PhD from Kings College London, investigating the biomedical application of a marine sponge-derived natural product. He is based in the London office and handles manuscripts in ecology.
Marian Turner, PhD
Marian has been a Senior Editor at Nature Ecology & Evolution since the journal launched in 2016. She has a background in immunology, with a PhD from the University of Melbourne. She joined Nature as a News & Views editor in London for five years before moving to Nature Ecology & Evolution. She is now based in the Melbourne office and handles primary manuscripts and review and opinion content in conservation, biodiversity and marine science, and policy.

Dr. Marco Elias is an evolutionary ecologist who investigates the processes that have led to the different color strategies found in animals and their potential impact on species' niches. He mainly uses phylogenetic comparative methods, niche modeling, and image analysis to understand the broader implications of species coloration on biodiversity and conservation. In addition to his research, Dr. Elias works as the Social Media Editor for npj Biodiversity, using his scientific communication skills on social media to promote awareness and engagement in biodiversity research. He is a motivated researcher committed to advancing knowledge of the natural world through scientific investigation and communication.
