Effect of Liver Regeneration following Partial Hepatectomy on the Uptake of Tritiated Thymidine in the Pituitary Gland of the Rat

Abstract

THE role of the pituitary gland in liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy is not clearly defined. It has been reported that hypophysectomy has no effect on rat liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy1. There are conflicting reports as to the effect of thyroidectomy on rat liver regeneration1,2. Variance of the foregoing reports suggested a necessity for further investigation of the inter-relationship existing between the regenerating liver, pituitary and thyroid glands. In another report from our laboratory, the thyroid gland demonstrated a marked increase in uptake of tritiated thymidine several days after peak incorporation in the regenerating liver following partial hepatectomy3. This communication is concerned with the inter-relation of the anterior pituitary gland and liver regeneration as studied by means of tritiated thymidine incorporation.
