Abstract
WE have examined eleven strains of Pasteurella pestis isolated by M. Bahmanyar, Y. Karimi and C. Rodrigues de Almeida in an inveterate focus of plague at Exu, Pernambuco, Brazil, and sent to us by M. Baltazard. We have confirmed the curious behaviour observed by these investigators, with all of nearly 200 such isolates from this focus, that Exu strains show high pathogenicity for mice but apparently are innocuous for guinea-pigs (M. Baltazard, personal communication). We have tried to explain this host-specificity by comparing the behaviour of these isolates with that of a typical fully virulent strain MP6, which is highly pathogenic for both these species.
