Behavioural Effects of in utero Administration of Morphine

Abstract

ALTHOUGH numerous studies have been concerned with the behavioural effects of opiates, relatively little attention has been paid to the offspring of females receiving an opiate during pregnancy. The matured offspring's response to stress and to the same drug are important issues in terms of current drug abuse and potential widespread application of opiate maintenance programmes. Since morphine is readily transferred across both placental and lacteal barriers1,2, we have studied the analgesic response to morphine in the offspring of mice receiving the drug during gestation and lactation.
