Abstract
HERBIVOROUS zooplankton can graze on planktonic algae, bacteria and detrital particles1. Selective feeding of planktonic crustaceans on algae has been described and attributed to passive size selection by filtration or raptorial feeding1. The ingestion and utilisation of algae, bacteria and detritus by zooplankton has also been noted2–6 but as yet there have been few reports concerning the behaviour of zooplankton grazing on mixtures of algae and bacteria.
